A place that truly stands apart
There are places you hear about and add to your "someday maybe" list. And then there are those that tip your trip into the category of memories you never forget. Tendacayou in Deshaies is clearly the second kind.
I discovered this ecolodge while looking for something different for clients who want more than a hotel. Something that feels like the real Guadeloupe, with the comfort you deserve when you've made the journey from mainland France or Canada. Tendacayou ticks every one of those boxes, and a few more besides.
Perched on the hillside above Deshaies, facing one of the most beautiful bays in Guadeloupe, the estate offers 14 unique dwellings nestled in tropical forest, a treetop spa, and a restaurant we'll come back to. Here is everything you need to know before booking.
And because Kudja Travel has built a partnership with Tendacayou, my clients and followers get an exclusive promo code: -5% off their nights (excluding restaurant, spa and other services). You'll find the code further down in the article.
Deshaies, the perfect setting
Before talking about the property itself, we need to talk about the location. Deshaies is a side of Guadeloupe you don't necessarily expect on a first visit. Far from the crowded beaches of southern Grande-Terre, this fishing village on the northern tip of Basse-Terre has something untouched about it. A crescent bay, colourful Creole houses, fishing boats coming back in the morning with the day's catch.
Tendacayou has settled into this landscape with real intelligence, clinging to the hillside just outside the village but less than ten minutes from Grande Anse, one of the island's most beautiful beaches. The estate is surrounded by dense tropical forest, on the edge of the Guadeloupe National Park. In practice: you wake up to birdsong, hummingbirds dance around your terrace, and the view over the bay is exactly what you pictured before leaving home.
Mégane's tip
Deshaies takes a little effort to reach: allow around 50 minutes from Guadeloupe Airport. But that distance is also what protects it. Book a hire car — it's essential for making the most of the area.
The 14 dwellings: each one has a soul
What makes Tendacayou special is that no two dwellings are alike. Every accommodation has a name, a personality, a story. The cabins are grouped into three families.
The treehouses
The heart of the estate's identity. Built from tropical timber and anchored into century-old mango trees, these four dwellings offer total immersion in the canopy, with the sea as a backdrop.
Fitzcarraldo is certainly the most striking: three levels in the branches, a panoramic terrace facing the bay of Deshaies, a jacuzzi, a Japanese bath and an outdoor shower. It's been called "a ship run aground in the branches" and that's exactly the feeling it evokes. It sleeps up to 4. Doudou An Mwen is designed for couples: a jacuzzi nestled in the foliage, Japanese bath, private garden, sea view on one side and a perched bedroom on the other. Château Mango is ideal for families or groups, with 3 double bedrooms, a large lap pool and a barbecue. And the Cabane de Dimitri, the childhood home transformed into a luxury retreat, offers a Japanese bath at the top of the mango tree and an unbeatable view over the Caribbean Sea.

The Creole cases
Eight dwellings built from old corrugated iron, stone, bamboo and Creole timber. Each carries a name that says something about Guadeloupe.
Zen Zen plunges you into a world of absolute serenity: a living area suspended in a mango tree, a kitchen between rock and zen garden, a murmuring stream, a jacuzzi under a canopy of plants. Le Dojo, in bamboo, sits right above the spa with a private staircase leading directly down to it. Kaz à Léa, in bold colours (mauves, fuchsias, dark wood), has a large terrace with a panoramic view over the forest. Mamoune and Indigo both have that bay-view jacuzzi that makes you never want to leave. Yes Papa surprises with its sea-facing swing and outdoor bathroom serenaded by birdsong.

The waterside bungalows
Two Creole bungalows set beside a natural pool. Zanoli gives access to a genuine natural river pool, with a diving platform and a Japanese bath. Pauline has a mezzanine suspended directly above the water, so you fall asleep to the sound of the current.
Who is it for?
For anyone in search of a complete break from daily life. No television, no air conditioning: your evenings are filled with the rustle of branches swaying in the trade winds.
All dwellings, whatever the category, include breakfast and a welcome cocktail in the nightly rate. A detail that matters.
Le Poisson Rouge and breakfast
Food is a full part of the Tendacayou experience. The estate's restaurant is called Le Poisson Rouge, and it deserves its own mention.
Authentic Creole cuisine revisited with finesse, elevated by the fresh produce of Guadeloupe. The dining room is nestled in the lush greenery of the estate, with that particular atmosphere found in places that aren't trying to impress anyone and somehow do it anyway. Guest reviews are unanimous: it's a delight, and several guests come back specifically for dinner.

Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 9:30am at the Tendacayou restaurant.
The spa: a sanctuary in the heart of the forest
Tendacayou's spa is an experience in itself. Set in the heart of the tropical vegetation, it offers treatments inspired directly by the natural riches of Guadeloupe: coconut milk Japanese baths, scrubs, massages of your choice (Californian, Swedish, lomi-lomi or bamboo), plus a sauna and hammam surrounded by nature. One guest described it as a place "where you can hear the waterfall, the wind, the birds". That's exactly it.

The spa is open Monday to Thursday from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 5:30pm, and Friday to Sunday from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 6pm. Booking is required. Packages range from a simple wellness break to a full duo day.
My take: who is Tendacayou made for?
I recommend Tendacayou to almost every client coming to Guadeloupe who is looking for a night or a stay that stands out. But there are profiles for whom this place is especially suited.
- Honeymooners and anniversary couples: Doudou An Mwen, Mamoune or Indigo are dwellings built for intimacy and magic. The duo spa and dinner at Le Poisson Rouge complete the picture perfectly.
- Those who want a one-of-a-kind experience: sleeping perched in a century-old mango tree facing the bay of Deshaies is the kind of memory you talk about for years.
- Families and groups: Château Mango (up to 6 people, 3 bedrooms, lap pool) or Yes Papa are perfect for a group holiday where everyone has their own space.
- Those who want to reconnect: no big shared pool, no noisy bar. Here you find yourself, slow down, and listen to the forest. It's a deliberate choice.
